Second 11 vs Colwall on August 1, 2010
Phoenix win by 147 runs

Second 11 204 : Colwall 147

Bristol Phoenix 2nd XI v Colwall Bristol Phoenix's first ever encounter with Herefordshire Colwall at Chipping Sodbury on Sunday will be noted for the achievements of two young Phoenix Bats. In Phoenix innings of 294 for 3 wickets, both 16 year old Sophie Williams and 14 year old Jo Cull recorded their maiden hundreds. The pair came together when the first wicket fell at 17 when Hannah Thompson departed for 2, the pair added 205 runs for the second wicket, the more aggressive Williams was the first to her hundred , with her younger partner Cull playing the supporting role, the stand was noted for some excellent running between the wickets and punishment of the bad ball, when Williams left the wicket for a score of 102, Cull began to play the dominant role, Kat Spray with a useful 19 not out guided Cull to her hundred which she completed in the final over of the Phoenix innings. After tea Colwall's top order provided the stiffest examination of the Phoenix bowling this season, openers Becky Fortnam and Kate Trawson rattled up a opening stand of 49 runs in 10 overs with scoring shots all round the wicket, Fortnam went for 10 runs bowled by Danika Dyer, Trawson was then well supported by Kate Farmer as the momentum was continued, Trawson was bowled by captain George Boston for a creditable 35. Farmer and new bat Hannah Hanncock batted solidly before Farmer was superbly caught and bowled by Dyer on her reintroduction to the attack, Farmer scoring 34. Unfortunately Colwall had no depth in their batting and the run chase came to halt, wickets tumbled regularly and Colwall were dismissed for 147 runs, the wickets being shared around, George Boston being the pick of the Phoenix attack with 3 wickets for 14 runs. The Phoenix winning margin does not reflect the quality of the cricket played, Colwall being the most challenging opposition for Phoenix Seconds this season.

Phoenix win by 46 run

Second 11 157 : Corse & Staunton 111

Corse & Staunton v Bristol Phoenix 2nd XI The youngest ever Phoenix second team recorded a well deserved 46 run victory over Corse & Staunton at Gloucester on Sunday. Benson was also supported well by Charlotte Fox as the pair added a useful 69 runs. After tea the Corse response was blown away by Benson the bowler this time as she remove the dangerous Sarah Jennings for only 6, the left armer on two occaisons took two wickets in an over twice in her tally of four. Skipper Boston then took the opportunity to introduce some of the younger members of the side to the attack, which saw Laura Sutton take her first senior wicket with an excellent caught and bowled, Emily Wilson on debut claimed her first wicket, and Charlotte Fox got her name among the wicket takers. Finally George Boston reintroduce herself to the attack and claim her second wicket and bring proceedings to a close and the Phoenix claiming the victory. Corse & Staunton being bowled out for 111.

Under 15 vs Frenchay on July 12, 2010
Phoenix won by 55 runs

Under 15 152 for 5 : Frenchay 97 all out

A series of outstanding catches laid the foundations for a final win of the season in the Bristol Youth League for Bristol Phoenix’s Under 13/15 team against Frenchay.
Put in to bat on the excellent Tockington wicket, a steady start from skipper Hannah Thompson and Tilly da Cunha, put Phoenix on the path to an excellent total. The loss of three quick wickets threatened to slow the progress of the innings, but a rapid stand of 99 in just 8 overs between Amelia Andrews (52 retired not out, including 11 fours) and Abi Williams (29 not out) rocked Frenchay back, as the boundary was found on a regular basis.
Frenchay made a lightening start in reply and had over 40 on the board after just 5 overs, but a series of brilliant catches kept knocking the innings back. It seemed that every ball hit in the air, no matter how hard, resulted in a catch as wickets tumbled. To their credit, Frenchay kept playing their shots, but Phoenix kept catching them out.
Lauren Potter with 3 for 23, Amelia Andrews (2 for 6 and two catches), Immie Pearce (2 for 9), Grace Benson (2 for 10) and Chloe Campbell (1 for 17) took the wickets as Frenchay were dismissed for 97 to leave Phoenix winners by 55 runs.
This result put Phoenix into second place in their Division, an excellent achievement for this mainly young team. Full credit for this must go to skipper, Hannah Thompson, who has led from the front in every match

Phoenix won by 10 wickets

First 11 48 for 0 : Bridgend 47 all out

Phoenix retained their position at the top of the South West Regional League with an emphatic 10 wicket win at the weekend.
Bridgend could only muster 7 players who were no match for the Phoenix attack of Sam Brazier and Alex MacDonald, who both took three wickets as Bridgend were shot out for just 47.
It took just 7 overs for operners Fi Morris and Charlie Walker to knock off the runs to secure a 10 wicket win.
Phoenix's next match against a determined Plympton side will decide who qualifies to play a knock out match to join the Women's National League.

Cam vs Second 11 on July 9, 2010
Phoenix win by 27 runs

Cam 94 : Second 11 121

Bristol Phoenix's winning streak continued with a 27 run victory in a 20 over game against Cam at the Stinchcombe Stragglers Ground on Friday. Winning the toss and batting Phoenix scored 121 -3, the back bone of the innings coming from Sophie Williams 49 and Carys Allen 32 as the openers put on 98 in 15 overs, the pair over came some difficult challenges earlier on as the new ball, a bouncy wicket and some good Cam bowling tested the resilience of the opening pair, never the less neither of them was going to give their wicket away easily, as stout defence, good running between the wickets and punishing the odd bad ball was their strategy. In reply Cam found Phoenix's attack difficult to get away but Becky Davies was always keen to put bat to ball with some blows in her 33 before being run out by a direct throw to the stumps, Cam were always behind the clock due to the bowling attack backed up by some good ground fielding. Despite 20 runs coming from the bat of Sue Bates, Cam fell short of the target their innings closing at 94, in what was an enjoyable fixture, good quality cricket played in the right spirit.

Bath vs First 11 on July 4, 2010
Phoenix won by 211 runs

Bath 66 all out : First 11 277 for 8

Bristol Phoenix romped to the top of the league with an emphatic 211 run victory over a depleted Bath side on Sunday.
Electing to bat first, an all too familiar batting collapse at the start of the innings saw Phoenix reduced to 18 for 3 and then 41 for 4 as Daisy Vowles took advantage of some careless batting by the top order.
It took skipper Sam Brazier and opener Fi Morris to stabilise the innings with an 81 run partnership, before Morris misjudged a single and was run out for a hard fought, but stylish 55 – her highest senior score. Abby Evans joined Brazier and together they added a further 116 to take the game away from Bath, before Brazier fell lbw for a skipper’s knock of 54.
A late flurry of boundaries saw the Phoenix innings close on 277 for 8, with Abby Evans undefeated on 63, an excellent innings full of powerful drives and including 7 fours.
In reply, Bath had no answer to the formidable Phoenix bowling, with every bowler troubling the inexperienced batting line up. Sam Brazier (3 for 18), Fi Morris (3 for 10), Sidra Khan (2 for 8) and Rosie Tregear (1 for 18) were the wicket takers, with only opener Hannah Sparks surviving the onslaught, to carry her bat for 27, as Bath were dismissed for 66 just before the rains came.
This victory sees Phoenix pull clear at the top of the league and ready to face Bridgend next week.

Malpas vs Second 11 on June 27, 2010
Phoenix win by 130 runs

Malpas 66 : Second 11 196

Bristol Phoenix 2nd complete their first double of the season to remain unbeaten for the season at Malpas on Sunday, Winning the toss and electing to bat in the heat of Sunday summer afternoon the young side amassed 196 for the loss of two wickets. The bedrock of the innings came from Hannah Thompson with a well deserved 50, her strength lying in her ability to drive the ball exceptionally well. Thompson figured in a opening stand of 126 with 12 year old wicket keeper bat Naomi Forecast who was more than happy to play the supporting ball but not frighten to dispatch the odd ball to the boundary, Forecast recorded a personal best of 29, which she was also proud to state that this was also a personal best for the Forecast household, and will no doubt create some sibling rivalry with her 15 year old brother who performs for the under 15 Thornbury side. After their departures it was left to Sophie Williams to smash a 32 ball 42 not out as the first ever half century for the talented bat her eluded her one again. 13 year Charlotte Fox in her first full length senior game supported the partnership well with some excellent judgement of running between the wickets and showed a very good understanding of this important skill, her 10 not out does not do justice to the contribution she made to the partnership. After tea the Phoenix attack met some dogged resistance from the Malpass bats, but Harri Harris 4 -11 and George Boston 4 wickets from 4 overs for only a miserly 4 runs done the damage aided by some excellent catching at the wicket y Thompson and Williams, the attack was shared around in the heat and the attack bowlers were well supported by Laura Sutton on debut, Tilly Da Cunha and Danika Dyer, leg spinner Kat Spray bowled with no luck. In the end Malpass wilted to 66 runs all out but provided some stiff resistance. Captain Boston being complimented for her leadership, field placing and the important aspect of getting every one involved in the game.

First 11 vs Bournemouth on June 27, 2010
Phoenix won by 7 wickets

First 11 98 for 3 : Bournemouth 96 all out

On a hot and sunny afternoon, Bournemouth elected to bat and soon found themselves in trouble as Alex Macdonald and Sam Brazier reduced the Dorset side to 10 for 3 within the first 5 overs.
Katie Haddon and Lisa Edsworthy responded with a gritty partnership to stabilise the Bournemouth innings, taking advantage of the fast outfield to score some welcome boundaries. Phoenix responded by turning to the off spin of Fi Morris who, after taking a few overs to establish her length, worked her way through the middle order, tasking 3 wickets for 20 runs from her 9 over spell.
With support form the tail, Katie Haddon, finishing unbeaten on a very accomplished 46, guided the Bournemouth total to 96 all out. Alex MacDonald (2 for 5), Sam Brazier (1 for 16), Sidra Khan (1 for 15), Rosie Tregear (1 for 11) and Carys Allen (1 for 2) took the other wickets for Phoenix.
Emily Waldron (26) and Helen Ware (6) made a solid start in chasing down the total, before both fell bowled and when Lauren Rowles was caught for a bright 21, it was left to Alex MacDonald (15) and Sam Brazier (20) to see Phoenix safely over the line without further alarm.
This latest victory sees Phoenix retain their position as joint leaders of the South West League. Next week they travel to fellow leaders Bath for a crucial match, which could well decide the fate of the championship

Frampton Cotterell vs Under 17 on June 23, 2010
Phoenix won by 21 runs

Frampton Cotterell 77 all out : Under 17 98 for 7

A fascinating match featuring fragile batting (on both sides), a determined batting recovery (by Phoenix), some excellent bowling (both sides), with spin a feature for Phoenix. All resulting in an unlikely victory for Phoenix by 21 runs.
Batting first, Phoenix succumbed to some straight but hardly lethal bowling by G Fulger (4 for 9) and found themselves at 20 for 5 in the seventh over. Whatever happened to the forward defensive? A mini stand of 20 between Rosie Tregear (13) and Carys Allen (7) looked like restoring some pride, but both were then bowled. It was left to skipper Laura Marshall (17 not out) and Chloe Davis (20 not out) to take the score to 98 for 7 with some good running and a few boundary shots.
In reply, Frampton failed to come to terms with Phoenix’s all spin attack, led by Fi Morris, who opened with two wicket maidens, and supported by leg spinner Chloe Davis. M Sherman (26) hit a few lusty blows, before the next rank of spinners worked their way through the middle order, despite Phoenix’s fielders dropping a host of catches.
With 16 overs completed, Phoenix had run out of spin options, but no matter, as seamer Rosie Tregear swept away the tail taking the final two wickets in four balls, as Phoenix ran out winners by 21 runs – a victory that looked impossible at 20 for 5. Just goes to show it’s never over til the singing starts.

Under 15 vs Winterbourne on June 21, 2010
Phoenxix won by 6 wickets

Under 15 93 for 4 : Winterbourne 90 for 5

Another close match for Phoenix, this time with a happier ending.
Electing to field first and without a few regular players, Phoenix’s bowlers performed a steady job after Jo Cull had taken an early wicket. Lauren Potter (2 for 13) continued the good work and with, Laura Sutton picking up her first Under 15 wicket, Winterbourne’s innings was kept in check. R Sharpe top scored with an unbeaten 26 in a total of 90 for 5. For Phoenix, Zoe Cullum, Charlotte Fox and Chloe Campbell all bowled well.
In reply, Phoenix’s reshuffled batting line up struggled to get going and found themselves 7 for 3 in just a few overs. A 43 run partnership between Lauren Potter (16) and Amy Collinson put the innings back on track, before Lauren Potter fell to a sharp catch at square leg. Skipper Hannah Thonpson joined Amy Collinson, but with the overs ticking away, a close finish was on the cards.
The final over saw Phoenix requiring 6 runs to win and a well struck boundary from the third ball by Amy Collinson, to take her personal score to 46, saw Phoenix home by 6 wickets in a closely fought match

Bishopston U11 vs Under 11 on June 16, 2010
Bristol Phoenix won by 3 runs

Bishopston U11 65 for 7 off 20 over : Under 11 68 for 6 off 19 over

Yet again the girls left it to a nail biting finish. Putting Bishopston into bat first, Imogen Pearce set about removing two batters in her first over for no runs & then removed another in her second again for no runs. Captain Charlotte Dukes, under instruction from her team manager, took Imogen off and used a total of seven bowlers (she won't do that again !) Bishopston managed to steady the collapse for a while and kept pushing the score along helped with extras (wides). Phoenix managed to restict the home side to 65 for 7 off 20 overs. Phoenix had to score at a run rate of three an over and set about chasing this rate slowly. With scoreboard pressure mounting the girls managed to run 2 batsmen out, both times the ball went to Bishopston's best fielder who hit the wickets with direct throws! The score and wickets trickled along at the rate required and with two overs to go Imogen Pearce decided to "have a go" and managed to put the pressure back onto the fielders - Imogen top scored with 9. Charlotte Dukes hit the winning runs with a fine pull shot/slog to the square leg boundary in the 19th over. An impressive performance by our girls who managed to restrict the opposition to a modest score with some fine fielding - Grace Benson took a great catch in the covers - the ball was hit hard and was passing Grace low to her right side, obseving from square leg umpire I thought nice shot son 4 runs all the way. Unfortunately for the batter Grace did not see it that way and stuck out her hand down by her right ankle and held it for a superb catch. Even the opposition supporters applauded. Well done Grace. This result maintains our 100% record in the league - played four won four. Good stuff lets keep it going.

Under 15 vs Hambrook on June 14, 2010
Hambrook won by 2 runs

Under 15 106 for 4 : Hambrook 108 for 4

A close contest saw Hambrook squeak home by 2 runs in a match that could have gone either way.
Bowling first, the Phoenix attack contained the Hambrook batters without looking like making a break through until Charlotte Dukes took the ball. Bowling hostile left arm over she yorked three batters in short order to put Phoenix in charge of the game. A late rally by Marcus Beauchamp and Liam Crew restored the game’s balance, as Hambrook posted 108 for 4, Charlotte Dukes finishing with an impressive 3 wickets for 13.
In reply, Hannah Thompson and Jo Cull put together an opening partnership of 69 in 13 overs, before one sharp single too many saw Jo Cull run out for 27. With the game finely balanced, Hannah Thompson fell to a brilliant catch for 27, to leave Abi Williams and Charlotte Dukes requiring 23 from the last 3 overs and just 10 from the last 6 balls.
A well struck boundary Charlotte Dukes in the middle of the over set up a last ball finish, but a single from that ball left Phoenix a disappointing 2 runs short in a thrilling game.

Thornbury vs Under 15 on June 10, 2010
Thornbury won by 121 runs

Thornbury 162 for 9 : Under 15 41 all out

Phoenix's unbeaten run of four games this season came to an abrupt halt at Thornbury in the Cup, as Hannah Thompson's side crashed to a big defeat.
Electing to bowl, Phoenix took two early wickets at Jo Cull clean bowled both openers to reduce Thornbury to 12 for 2, but Stuart MacWhinnie and Sam Summerfield put the Thornbury innings back on track as they plundered the other bowlers with a succession of boundaries, both completing excellent half centuries.
Phoenix responded with Immie Pearce demolishing the middle order with 4 wickets for 23, as Thornbury's carefree batters continued to play every shot in the book. Naomi Forecast with two stumpings kept the batsmen honest and even a sensational catch by skipper Hannah Thompson could not prevent Thornbury posting a formidable score of 162 for 9.
In reply Phoenix had no answer to the straight Thornbury bowling, but did not help themselves with a series of reckless shots as wickets tumbled on a regular basis. A couple of excellent diving catches only added to Phoenix's woes and the innings subsided to just 41 all out in the 16th over.
A well deserved win for Thornbury, who deservedly progress to the quarter finals.

First 11 vs Warminster on June 6, 2010
Phoenix won by 226 runs

First 11 282 for 4 : Warminster 56 all out

Bristol Phoenix CC’s latest match in the south West Championship resulted in a resounding victory, arising exclusively from three outstanding personal performances.
Electing to bat on a flat pitch with fast outfield, Phoenix made a stuttering start, losing three quick wickets to opening bowler, Emily Wakeling, to slump to 22 for 3. In strode left hander, Alex Macdonald, to calmly hit her first ball for four. She then proceeding to hit another 23 boundaries (including one six) as she battered the Warminster attack for 152, easily her highest score.
But it was not just an individual effort, as opener Helen Ware played a key role, hitting a magnificent unbeaten 75, again a personal best. Together, the pair added exactly 250 runs in 36 overs, a combination of precise boundary shots and well judged rotation of the strike. Alex Macdonald eventually fell in the last over caught in the deep, having guided Phoenix to 282 for 4 from their allotted 45 overs.
In reply, Warminster made a solid start and posted 50 in good time, for the loss of just one wicket. But up stepped off spinner, Fi Morris, to rip through the Warminster innings taking 6 wickets for 7 runs, the last five without conceding a run, to give Phoenix an overwhelming victory.
On paper, it looks a very one sided match, but in losing three early wickets, Phoenix could well have struggled to post a decent total. Similarly, Warminster were in little trouble with the bat until Fi Morris struck. What could have been another closely fought match was emphatically changed twice by three fantastic individual performances.
With this win, Phoenix retains joint leadership of the South West league after four matches.

Frocester vs Twenty20 on May 28, 2010
Phoenix won by 68 runs

Frocester 67 for 7 : Twenty20 135 for 5

Bristol Phoenix entered the 20/20 arena on Friday evening in a entertaining fixture at Frocester. The game was once again an ideal opportunity for Phoenix to introduce several emerging players from their youth section in to senior cricket, Naomi Forecast, Daisy Smith, Charlotte Fox, Sophie Marshall and Zoe Cullum all showed lots of commitment and potential for the future.
Phoenix won the toss and elected to bat and their total of 135 was a personal milestone for wicket keeper / batsman - Laura Marshall as she recorded her first ever half century. The young bat showed much composure in her innings which contained some well executed driver and pulls as the ball was caressed across the fast Frocester outfield.
After an early loss Marshall figured in a 112 run partnership with Naomi Forecast on her senior debut as she demonstrated her potential with a supportive 22.
Frocester in reply struggled with the accurate line and length of the Phoenix attack and wickets tumbled in the early part of their innings, but their late order batsman steadied the ship and although they were never in the hunt they managed to bat out the 20 overs ending on 67 for the loss of 7 wickets.
Jo Cull and Emily Waldron being the pick of the Phoenix bowlers with 2 wickets a piece.
Phoenix would like to thank the newly created Women and Girls team at Frocester for their hospitality on Friday, and wish them well for their future on going development in this aspect of the game of cricket in Gloucestershire.

Under 17 vs Winterbourne on May 26, 2010
Phoenix won by 42 runs

Under 17 77 for 3 : Winterbourne 35 for 8

Rain restricted this match to 13.2 overs, but did not prevent Phoenix turning in an outstanding all round performance
Put in to bat, Phoenix scored steadily at 5 runs an over, with Emily Waldron setting the tempo, striking 4 fours before being bowled for an enterprising 30. Izzie Howard (15 not out) and Sophie Williams (12 not out), then set up the innings for a grandsatnd finish, before a heavy shower threatened to wash out the match.
Nevertheless a total of 77 for 3 in the 13 overs allowed represented an major improvement in batting performance from previous weeks. Especially pleasing was the clear desire to look for runs at every opportunity.
The rain relented and with the wicket freshened up, Rosie Tregear (2 for 5) and Emily Waldron (2 for 9) tore into the early Winterbourne batting, supported by excellent ground fielding in the slippery conditions. Chloe Davis (3 for 7) and Holly Hill (2 for 13) gave the batters no respite and once Bracey was dismissed for 19, the innings ran out of steam and finished on 35 for 8.
With just one wide (remarkable, given the wet conditions), the bowling unit looked impressive and together with high tempo batting and committed fielding, topped off an impressive display.

Bristol YMCA vs Under 13 on May 24, 2010
Phoenix won by 6 runs

Bristol YMCA 80 : Under 13 86

Yet another nail biting finish to this league match but another fine victory to the girls. The girls were pleasantly suprised by the size of the opposition and if the groundsman had not cut the outfield they may well have lost one or two players. None the less they suprised them more with fine accurate bowling and managed to quickly take three wickets in the first three overs. In steps Charlotte Dukes who then smashed a fine 25 runs off 9 balls, she then had to retire under league rules! New girl Zoe Cullum scored 8 runs and hit a very fine volley straight back past the bowler. The second top scorer was by Naomi Forecast with an excellent 19 runs, four of which were 4's. Charlotte was able to return to the crease after 9 wickets had fallen where she then had an opportunity to knock up a big score. Taking an easy single to keep strike she then ran herself out for 26 - lesson learnt? The girls managed 64 runs off the bat - their best to date. Charlotte then rallied the troups and set about restricting the boys with some excellent fielding and bowling performances, Charlotte managing to run two boy's out with direct hits from square. Grace Benson was the pick of the bowlers with 4overs-2mdns-10runs-2wkts (3 wides = 6 runs) Immogen Pearce also contributed well with 4overs-0mdns-10runs-2wkts (3 wides also) Zoe Cullum, Alice Graham, Charlotte Fox & Ella Wheatley all bowled well to help restrict the score - 28 off the bat. The girls are showing signs of improvement each week and their fielding and commitment is outstanding, well done to one and all.

Under 17 vs Bradley Stoke on May 19, 2010
Phoenix won by 36 runs

Under 17 90 for 7 : Bradley Stoke 54 all out

Phoenix's Under 17's secured their first win of the season with a stunning bowling performance to run out winners by 36 runs.
Batting first, a much more rapid start than normal saw the score reach 48 before the loss of the second wicket, with Holly Hill (21) and Abby Evans (19) scoring well.
The momentum could not be maintained, however, and the usual batting frailities reappeared, so that the score at innings close was a modest 90 for 7.
The bowling performamce, however, was excellent, lead by Holly Hill with 4 wickets for 9 runs from her alloted overs. Well supported by Fi Morris (2 for 13) and Chloe Davis (2 for 9), Bradley Stoke were shot out for just 54 in 16 overs, with all their batters clean bowled.
A comfortable win for Phoenix by 36 runs, but more importantly, a much improved all round cricket performance.

Under 15 vs Carsons on May 17, 2010
Phoenix won by 76 runs

Under 15 129 for 6 : Carsons 53 all out

Put in to bat, Phoenix made a stuttering start and soon found themselves at an unfamiliar 28 for 4 as D Coloqhuon took two early wickets for 22. Abi Williams and Amy Collinson, however, put the innings back on track with a quick fire stand of 41 before Amy Collinson was run out for 20, called for just one too many sharp singles.
Charlotte Dukes joined the action and added 50 rapid runs with Abi Williams, before another run out saw the innings close on a respectable 129 for 6. Abi Williams top scored with 31, with Charlotte Dukes undefeated on 24.
Carsons were soon in trouble in reply, as Tilly da Cunha ripped through the top order, taking 4 for 10 and with Grace Benson taking two sharp caught and bowled chances at the other end, only B Miles stood firm. Hitting powerfully to the leg side, he was eventually bowled by Immie Pearce’s first and only ball for an entertaining 28.
Carsons fell short by 76 runs, with Grace Benson taking 3 for 14 and Amy Collinson 2 for 6.

Plympton vs First 11 on May 16, 2010
Phoenix won by 2 wkts

Plympton 160 for 9 : First 11 161 for 8

We travelled down a soggy M5 to play last year’s league champions, Plympton, and came way with the full 20 points after a nail biting two wicket victory in a game with more twists and turns than the famous ride at Alton Towers.
Hoping to make best use of the damp conditions, We invited Plympton to bat, but despite losing an early wicket, Nicole Richards and Amara Carr batted with great assurance to set a seemingly formidable platform. Two interruptions for rain made the damp ball difficult to control for the our bowlers and, at 147 for 2 with 6 overs remaining, Plympton had their eyes on a total brushing 200.
But when Carr departed for an excellent 54, the Plympton innings collapsed as first Sam Brazier, then Charlie Walker and Alex Macdonald, swept way the remaining batters for just 17 runs, capturing 7 more wickets, as Plympton struggled to total 160 for 9 at innings close.
Sam Brazier, with 5 for 48 (including a triple wicket maiden), Charlie Walker (2 for 28), Fi Morris (1 for 27) and a miserly Alex Macdonald (1 for 10 from 9 overs), were the wicket takers.
The loss of an early wicket merely encouraged Helen Ware and Lauren Rowles to go on the offensive and with 48 on the board in only 11 overs, it looked to be a comfortable run chase for Phoenix.
Plympton’s spinners then changed the course of the game again, with a classic “stop the runs and then take wickets” strategy and two crucial wickets fell as we tried to up the run rate.
Alex Macdonald, with a breezy 25, helped the watchful Helen Ware (38) to put Phoenix right back in the game with a stand of 40 before holing out in the 34th over. Plympton pressed home their advantage to reduce Phoenix to 114 for 7, with overs running out.
But in strolled Sophie Williams, who proceeded to win the game with a blistering assault on the bowlers, hitting 37 not out in just 28 balls, with a combination of boundary strikes and scampered runs.
With now just 6 required from the last over, Laura Marshall clipped the penultimate ball to square leg to allow Williams to race home for the winning run and a two wicket victory. An excellent team effort, topped off with several outstanding individual performances.
We now move to joint top of the South West league after three matches.

Under 15 vs Coalpit Heath on May 12, 2010
Phoenix won by 54 runs

Under 15 128 for 3 : Coalpit Heath 74 all out

Electing to bat first, Phoenix took the loss of an early wicket in their stride, as Amy Collinson and Jo Cull (29), with a combination of boundary hits and sharp singles, took the score to 72 by the 11th over. When Collinson departed for 33, skipper Hannah Thompson (15 not out) continued the good work and guided Phoenix to an impressive 128 for 3 at innings close.
In reply, Coalpit Heath never recovered form a blistering opening spell of bowling from Chloe Campbell (in her first ever hard ball match) and Amy Collinson, well supported by excellent ground fielding. By the eight over, Coalpit Heath were reduced to 22 for 6, but a late rally by the lower order, led by Amber Day (11 not out), helped the final total to 74 before the final wicket fell in the last over.
Chloe Campbell (2 for 12), Amy Collinson (2 for 2), Lauren Potter (1 for 9) and Hannah Thompson (1 for 12) took the bowlers’ wickets, but four run outs were a testament to the quality of the ground fielding.
Overall, an impressive all round display by the Phoenix team, well led by skipper Hannah Thompson.

Under 13 vs Thornbury on May 10, 2010
Thornbury won by 8 wickets

Under 13 81 for 7 off 20 : Thornbury 83 for 2 off 12

After the success of our two opening matches the girls were brought down to earth by an impressive Thornbury side. Batting first, Phoenix soon came under pressure when Harry Wormwell took early wickets with some fine attach bowling. After three overs Phoenix were three wickets down with extras contributing mainly to the scoreboard. The girls did respond positively and soon realised that by running quick singles from mis fields and a deep field setting they could move the score along. The batting performance came from Imogen Pearce who dispatched the ball to the boundary with some impressive stroke play, the boys did not expect this and soon realised they were in a game. Supported by Alice Graham, Sophie Marshall, Charlotte Dukes Phoenix managed to push the score up to 81 for 7 off 20 overs. In reply Thornbury managed to quickly pass the required score and reached 83 for 2 off 12 overs. The Phoenix attack of Charlotte Dukes & Imogen Pearce had the boys on the back foot from the start, Charlotte was the pick of the bowlers taking both wickets. Although the girls have not played much outdoor cricket they are showing signs of becoming very good cricketers both with bat and in the field. There are many positives to be taken from the first three matches thus far and there attitudes have been very impressive throughout. Keep up the good work

Second 11 vs Corse and Staunton on May 9, 2010
Phoenix won by 7 wickets

Second 11 78 -3 : Corse and Staunton 77 all out

Bristol Phoenix Second Eleven got their season off in fine style with a win over Corse & Staunton on Sunday at Chipping Sodbury. Fielding a younger than normal team with several players making their senior debuts Phoenix inflicted a 7 wicket defeat on the visitors from Gloucester. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat, the Corse openers found the opening attack of Rosie Tregear and Harri Harris difficult to play and score runs, the stranglehold on the batsman was maintained as debutantes Charlotte Dukes and Amber Day continue to bowl a miserly line and length. Finally the Corse batsman patience ran out as the need for runs became paramount, 13 year old Day broke through in the 17 over with Corse & Staunton's score at 33. Eventually Corse managed to finish their innings with a score of 77 runs. This was not before Danika Dyer nipped in to take 3 wickets for as many runs. In reply openers Hannah Thompson and Jo Cull figured in a 33 run opening partnership in 8 overs with some strong hitting and excellent running between the wickets, before Thompson needlessly ran herself out for 17 and Cull was adjudged leg before wicket for 15. It was left to Captain George Boston and player of the match Danika Dyer with 29 not out to take the Phoenix to a well deserved victory.

Bridgend vs First 11 on May 9, 2010
Phoenix won by 5 wickets

Bridgend 106 all out : First 11 107 for 5

Phoenix’s First Team travelled over to Bridgend for their opening match of the season and returned home with a satisfactory 5 wicket win.
Bowling first on a blustery afternoon, Phoenix opening bowlers failed to capitalise on an early wicket for Charlie Walker, as Bridgend made steady progress to 50 runs before skipper Sam Brazier bowled Pearce for a patient 14. A sharp catch by Alex MacDonald looked as though it might herald a clatter of wickets, but with Palmer now striking the ball well, it took another 12 overs before Phoenix struck again.
When Palmer fell to an excellent boundary catch by Lauren Rowles for a well constructed 50, the remaining Bridgend wickets fell in a clatter to Walker, who finished with 5 all bowled wickets for 31. Carys Allen also featured with 2 for 16 from 8 overs.
Needing a total of 107 to win, openers Fi Morris and Helen Ware put on 37 in just 6 overs, before Morris got a leading edge and fell caught and bowled for 20. The middle order all got in and then promptly got themselves out, but with a modest total to chase, it did not prevent Phoenix from reaching their target in 20 overs, to claim victory by 5 wickets. Helen Ware topped scored with 27.
A win and 20 points, but only a satisfactory performance. With a visit to last year’s league champions, Plympton, next week, the team will be looking to up their game in a crucial match.

Under 15 vs Rockhampton on April 19, 2010
Phoenix won by 9 wickets

Under 15 97 for 1 : Rockhampton 94 for 3

Bristol Phoenix CC’s season opened very early with a 9 wicket victory over Rockhampton in the first round of the Bristol Youth league Cup. Electing to field first, Phoenix’s opening bowlers displayed some early season rustiness, mixing wides with some excellent deliveries and so it took a run out to capture the first wicket of the new season. Two excellent catches by skipper Hannah Thompson at mid wicket from the bowling of Grace Benson (2 for 12) helped to restrict the Rockhampton score to 94 for 3 at the close of innings. In reply, Phoenix lost an early wicket when Abi Williams fell to a sharp catch at cover, but Jo Cull (24 not out) and Amy Collinson (30 not out) steered Phoenix home with an undefeated 84 run partnership, built on a combination of smartly taken singles and meaty boundary shots. All in all, an excellent start to the new season. For the full scorecard, follow the "Play cricket" link on this page and then click "Results"
